The Vaganova Method
The Vaganova Method is one of the world’s most respected systems of classical ballet training, celebrated for its artistry, precision and carefully structured progression. It was developed in the early 20th century by Agrippina Vaganova, a former dancer of the Imperial Russian Ballet who combined the strengths of French elegance, Italian virtuosity and the expressive traditions of Russian ballet into one cohesive teaching method. Based in St Petersburg, her syllabus revolutionised ballet education by creating a clear, age-appropriate pathway that develops dancers step by step, ensuring strong technical foundations while nurturing artistry and musicality. Today, the method continues to be taught around the world and remains the training system of the prestigious Vaganova Ballet Academy.
The benefits of the Vaganova method are seen in the quality, strength and versatility of the dancers it produces. Particular emphasis is placed on coordination of the whole body, expressive use of the arms and upper body, clean technique, strength through the back and legs, and an understanding of movement as both athletic and artistic. Rather than focusing only on steps, dancers are taught to move with purpose, musicality and emotional expression. This approach has shaped some of the most celebrated ballet artists in history, including Anna Pavlova, Rudolf Nureyev, Natalia Makarova, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Ulyana Lopatkina. Their artistry and technical brilliance are a testament to the enduring excellence of the Vaganova tradition.
We respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and dance today, the Whadjuk Noongar people, and pay our respects to Elders past and present
